St. Jude Syro-Malabar Parish Catechesis Ministry

The new Syro-Malabar mission in Winnipeg introduced a new avenue for young St. Jude Parish members to learn and dwell in Catechetical studies and Rites of the Syro-Malabar Church via Catechesis Ministry. The catechetical heritage of the Syro-Malabar Church is very old. Through the catechism studies and learning, faith was transitioned down from one generation to next generation. Based on Syro-Malabar Catechetical Commission – the apostolic period developed a system of Christian formation or catechesis known as the catechumenate. In this catechumenate, the newcomers were given proper instruction in Christian faith and suitable formation in Christian life and subsequently initiated into the Christian community through the sacraments of initiation. This catechumenate system of Christian formation took different forms and shapes in accordance with the particular context of each Church. St Jude Parish catechism school welcomes students from all Christian backgrounds and has three distinct categories for students from different age-groups. Catechism teachers under the guidance of Parish Priest and Principal conduct regular weekly learning sessions and various co-curricular activities.  Weekly Catechism session takes place at 4pm every Sunday before the Mass.  Parents were encouraged about the need for the religious study and persuaded to bring their children regularly for the Holy Mass and catechism classes.  Every third Sunday of the month is celebrated as Kids mass where children are given practice in the songs sung during the Holy Mass and it is very heartening to note their active participation. At present there are 38 students. Syro Malabar Church catechism texts and books are sourced from SYRO-MALABAR Apostolic Exarchate, Toronto Canada. The children actively participate in the weekly liturgical celebration and every week during the regular Sunday mass, second readings are done by the catechism students. Catechism student are making strides by participating in varied competitions held by the school such as Christian song challenge, Bible quiz, painting.
